Contribute to WHS risk management
BSBWHS414 describes the skills and knowledge required to contribute to WHS risk management, which includes the processes for identifying work health and safety (WHS) hazards and assessing and controlling the risk relating to those identified hazards.
It involves contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of risk controls according to legislative and organisational requirements.

BSBWHS414 Performance Evidence
The candidate must show they can complete the tasks specified in the unit by:
- Identifying Hazards and Controlling Risks: Recognizing at least two different WHS hazards and implementing controls to manage the associated risks.
- Evaluating Risk Controls: Reviewing the effectiveness of these risk controls.
For each of these tasks, the candidate must also:
- Identify and Apply WHS Information: Understand and use WHS information and data to select and apply appropriate techniques, tools, and processes for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and controlling risks.
- Assist in Documentation: Help document the processes used.
- Communicate with Relevant People: Share WHS requirements and compliance information with those who need to know.
- Follow WHS Requirements: Comply with all WHS rules for hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk control.
- Identify Duty Holders and Responsibilities: Recognize the WHS duty holders and understand their specific responsibilities.

The candidate must also demonstrate knowledge of the key concepts needed to complete the tasks, including:
- Sources of WHS Information: Internal and external sources of WHS information relevant to performance tasks, and how to access them.
- WHS Hazard Identification and Risk Management: Understanding the processes for identifying hazards, assessing risks, and controlling risks as specified by:
- WHS laws.
- The organization’s WHS policies, procedures, processes, and systems.
- Risk Management Duties: Knowing the roles and responsibilities of different WHS duty holders, as well as how to:
- Choose and use tools and techniques for hazard identification.
- Conduct, document, and communicate risk assessments.
- Assess the effectiveness of risk controls and create a risk control plan.
- Hazards vs. Risks: Understanding the difference between workplace hazards and risks.
- Common Workplace Hazards: Familiarity with common hazards, their nature, severity, and likelihood.
- Risk Control Methods: Knowledge of risk assessments and control measures that help eliminate or reduce risks.
BSBWHS414 Assessment Conditions
The assessment must follow WHS laws, legal responsibilities, and duty of care for this unit. It should be done in a safe environment where the candidate can consistently perform WHS tasks and must include access to:
- Workplace equipment, technology, software, and materials needed to access WHS laws and information.
- WHS laws, as well as organizational WHS policies, procedures, processes, and systems required to show performance skills.
- Case studies or, when possible, real situations.
- Opportunities for interaction with others.
Assessors must meet the requirements for assessors outlined in relevant vocational education and training laws, standards, or frameworks. for assessors as outlined in applicable vocational education and training laws and standards.
